What You Get Paid to Work at a Unicorn Startup

Over the last few months, the news has been dominated by headlines regarding the bubble in start-up valuations. TechCrunch’s Unicorn Leaderboard currently lists 153 start-ups that are valued at a billion dollars or higher. Uber ranks at the top of the list with a valuation of $51 billion and there are 21 companies on the list with a valuation of exactly $1 billion.

One detail we don’t usuallyvhear a lot about for these companies is what they pay their employees. Not only do many of these companies provide unlimited vacation days, catered lunches, flexible schedules, but they also pay well. TechCrunch released a report yesterday listing the 20 highest median salaries amongst start-up unicorns. There are a few surprises on the list. Uber’s employee pay does not even break the top 10 and Snapchat is nowhere to be found in the top 20.
